The Missing Piece in Your Training: Why Recovery Is Just as Important as the Work
You’ve shown up. You’ve put in the hard sessions — the early mornings, the heavy sets, the rounds on the mat. You’re doing everything right. So why does your body feel like it’s constantly playing catch-up?
If that sounds familiar, there’s a good chance recovery is the piece of your routine that’s still missing. Not more sleep (although yes, get more sleep). Not another protein shake. We’re talking about actively giving your body what it needs to repair, rebuild, and come back stronger.
That’s exactly what the sauna at Industrial Fitness is here for.
What the Sauna Actually Does for Your Body
Here’s the simple version: when you sit in a sauna, your body temperature rises. Your heart rate increases, your blood vessels dilate, and circulation picks up. Essentially, your body responds the way it would to moderate exercise — without the physical load.
That increased blood flow is doing something useful. It helps move nutrients to your muscles and flush out the waste products that build up during training. The heat also encourages your muscles to relax, which reduces that tight, heavy feeling you get after a tough session. Most people find a good 15–20 minutes in the sauna leaves them feeling noticeably looser and less sore.
There’s also a mental side to it that’s easy to underestimate. Stepping into the heat, away from your phone and the noise of the day, gives your nervous system a chance to downshift. If you’ve ever trained hard for weeks on end and started feeling flat, irritable, or just “off” — that’s often your nervous system asking for a break. The sauna is one of the best ways to give it one.
It’s not magic. It’s just your body doing what it’s designed to do, with a little help.
Why Recovery Isn’t Optional
A lot of people think of recovery as what you do when you’re injured or exhausted. But that’s backwards. Recovery is what stops you from getting there in the first place.
Training creates stress on your body — that’s the whole point. But the adaptation, the actual getting stronger and fitter part, happens during recovery. Without enough of it, you’re just stacking stress on top of stress. Progress stalls. Injuries creep in. Motivation takes a hit.
The members at Industrial Fitness who see the best results over time aren’t necessarily the ones who train the hardest. They’re the ones who train consistently — and consistency only happens when your body is recovering well enough to keep showing up.
Whether you’re lifting three times a week, attending Jiu Jitsu classes, or finding your feet in your first yoga session, building recovery into your routine is one of the smartest things you can do.
Making It Part of Your Week at Industrial Fitness
The sauna is available to all members, and it’s right here in the facility — no extra membership, no booking ahead, no drive across town. After your session, it’s a five-minute walk from the gym floor or the mat.
A simple way to start: use it for 15–20 minutes after two or three of your training sessions each week. Give it a few weeks and pay attention to how your body responds. Most members notice they’re less sore between sessions, sleeping better, and feeling more ready to train when the time comes.
If you want to go deeper on recovery, we have a few other tools that work well alongside it. The Sports Physio Lab operates on-site, which means you can get hands-on support from a physio without ever leaving the building — whether you’re managing a niggle or just want to stay ahead of any issues. Our yoga and mobility classes are also some of the most popular sessions on the timetable, and for good reason: they complement hard training beautifully, helping you move better and feel better week on week.
The community here helps too, more than people expect. When you’re surrounded by people who take their training seriously — and their recovery just as seriously — it becomes a natural part of how you approach fitness. You’ll hear people talking about their sauna sessions the same way they talk about their training sessions. It becomes part of the rhythm.
Come In and Experience It
