Mikeys Boxing team win South Island Gold

TWO Queenstown fighters won elite novice titles at the recent South Island boxing champs in Christchurch.

Guillaume Morel, 25, won the 80kg division after dropping down from 90kg in five weeks, and Manawa Rakete-Shea, who’s also 25, won the 75kg category.

The former won his two fights by unanimous decision (UD) and the latter won his first fight by UD and his second by TKO in the third round.

Remarkables Boxing & Training founder/head coach Mikey Jenner says their achievements left him ‘‘very overwhelmed’’.

‘‘These guys have fought their hearts out, they train their hearts out, so I’m absolutely thrilled they’ve got the wins they deserve.’’

Morel, who left Queenstown afterwards to go travelling, won an award for ‘boxer of the tournament’, and Jenner an award for coaching the boxer of the tournament.

Jenner’s operated out of Industrial Fitness for the past eight or nine months.

‘‘Before that we were just in spaces I could get my hands on’’, he says, including carparks.

Rakete-Shea, who only took up boxing again a year ago after a two-year gap, will compete in the South Island Golden Gloves in Kaiapoi late next month.

Jenner says he offers boxing classes for all levels, including kids and beginners, ‘‘in a fun and safe environment’’
