What is MMA?
In this blog we check what actually is MMA now that we have it on the timetable. Our classes are suitable for all levels - MMA gloves are required to participate.

🥊 What is MMA?
MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) is a full-contact combat sport that combines techniques from multiple fighting disciplines—both striking and grappling—into one competition.
⚔️ What “mixed” means
Instead of sticking to one style like boxing or karate, MMA blends skills from different martial arts, including:
- Boxing – punches
- Muay Thai – kicks, knees, elbows
- Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu – submissions, ground fighting
- Wrestling – takedowns and control
- Judo – throws and trips
Fighters train across all these areas to become well-rounded.
🥋 How a fight works
- Usually takes place in a cage (often called “the octagon”)
- Fights are split into rounds (typically 3 or 5 rounds, 5 minutes each)
- Fighters wear small gloves and minimal protective gear
🌍 Biggest organization
The most famous MMA promotion is the
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)
It’s where many of the world’s top fighters compete.
💥 Why MMA is popular
- It’s unpredictable—fights can end at any moment
- It tests complete fighting ability (not just one skill)
- It’s fast-paced and highly competitive
🧠 In simple terms:
MMA = a fight using the best techniques from multiple martial arts, both standing and on the ground.
In our classes we teach a mixture of stand up and grappling and learn how to combine these two disciplines together. We usually start with shadow boxing as a warm up then move onto light sparring with some combinations that we try and build on each class.
We will go through combinations in stand up leading to grappling in both attack and defense, usually finishing the class with light sparring.
