WORK is about to start on the first indoor gym for Queenstown’s fastgrowing southern corridor.
Queenstown’s largest private gym, Industrial Fitness, which operates in central Queenstown, will be leasing purpose-built premises at the new Park Ridge subdivision — the building is being developed by Park Ridge partner, Sir Brendan Lindsay.
The southern corridor also includes established Jack’s Point, Hanley’s Farm and O ¯ raka (formerly Lakeside Estates) and the new Woolbrae and Homestead Bay subdivisions.
Jujitsu exponent/instructor Brent Te Kawa, who bought Industrial Fitness from its founder Braden Lee about a year ago, says ‘‘we have a lot of members in the southern corridor travelling into town to train with us, so we’re just trying to do our little bit to alleviate traffic congestion’’.
He notes the southern corridor cycle trail goes right past the gym, and will eventually link up with Frankton and Kelvin Heights, once Queenstown Trails Trust builds a planned 2.3km trail between Park Ridge and the Kawarau Falls Bridge.
Te Kawa says they are importing Precore gym equipment from the United States for the 860sq m premises.
‘‘Everything we have on offer in town is going to be on offer at the new facility, including the combat classes with boxing, martial arts, group classes, strength, recovery, all the same.’’
He anticipates the gym, for which local-based Cook Brothers Construction has been awarded the contract, will open in about a year.
